Ash Cave is the largest recess cave in the state of Ohio. Native Americans used the cave as a shelter for centuries. Located behind a scenic Ohio waterfall, this Ohio cave gets its name from the abundant ashes on the cave floor, and because the ceiling of the cave is so blackened from fires in the cave.

Standing in the cave behind the waterfall is quite an experience. The cool water drops off the cliff and plummets over a Black Hand sandstone shelf 40 or 50 feet below, slides on over the shelf and plunges again for 10 or 12 feet against some more Black Hand before finally cascading down into the dark pool at the bottom of the gorge.
