Located next to the Chahinkapa Zoo in North Dakota, this fully restored 1926 antique carousel is only one of the 150 original wooden horse carousels still operating in the United States. It's open to the public daily Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.
When Roger Jensen and Jim Oliver took on the project of finding and restoring the antique Prairie Rose Carousel, their hopes quickly grew dim until a lead drew them to a carousel in Minnesota. They were happy to find that the carousel was complete, original and in restorable shape.
Lonnie Halverson and Delores Berg were the key artists responsible for the majority of the restoration process. Many of the horses had to have parts re-carved, and only after 20 plus coats of paint were stripped away. When the woodwork was done the horses were taken to be painted a process taking 50 hours on each one. |
