A 14-mile trek through the Uwharrie National Forest, the Birkhead Wilderness offers a plethora of opportunities for hiking amid the mountaintops. Beginning in Lassiter Mill and running 14 miles through wildness on Route 1143, this byway offers the traveler outdoor adventure, scenic woodlands and plenty of places to stop and bask in the natural splendor of the south.
