Raleigh North Carolina is the state capital and the home of the North Carolina University. This quiet, genteel southern city is a relaxing place to spend a day or two soaking up the local color.

Seeing some of the city’s many places of historical interest is easy thanks to the walking tour’s of Raleigh’s downtown, fine-looking old State House and the Oakwood district. Visitors interested in the Antebellum South will be fascinated by the attractions offered by Mordecai Historic Tours. Mordecai Park was once one of the largest plantations in the south and the supposedly haunted Mordecai House is the birthplace of America’s 17th President, Andrew Jackson.

Raleigh has many excellent Museums. The North Carolina Museum of Art is a bit off the beaten path, but has a lovely collection of Baroque and Renaissance paintings. The North Carolina Museum of History offers exhibits on the American Civil War and a model of the Wright Brothers’ plane. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences claims the world’s only dinosaur specimen with a fossilized heart, a Thescelosaurus called Willo.

There’s plenty for kids to do in Raleigh North Carolina. Looking to educate your kids? Try Exploris, Raleigh’s hands-on kids museum. Want to wear them out? Take them to Silver Lake Water Park for its boats, floats and water-slides. Then you can feed the little ones and get them all riled up again at Bullwinkle’s Family Food ‘n’ Fun, which features an indoor climbing wall, arcade, playground and (presumably) something to eat.

Raleigh is 25 minutes from the Raleigh/Durham International Airport. Register your best scarecrow at the annual Scarecrow Festival, held at the Pullen Arts Center every November.
