Ocracoke Island one of the barrier
islands of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is accessible
only by water or air. The pirate William Teach, aka Blackbeard,
is known to have once roamed this island.
As part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Ocracoke Island
has something for everyone, with the Pamlico Sound on one side
and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. There are 16 miles of sunny,
sandy wilderness beaches for visitors to enjoy. Guest to Ocracoke
can swim, fish, surf, or work on their tan, and there area plenty
of North Carolina campgrounds available with 2 local campgrounds
as well as those from the National Park Service. Many boats are
also available for charter so visitors ca do some North Carolina
fishing.
Ocracoke is on the eastern flyway of several species of migrating
birds. As such it is a birdwatcher's paradise. Hunting is permitted
in season and guide service is available.
