Long Island New York needs every
bit of its length to accommodate the many famous traveling destinations
it contains. The boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens cover only its
western tip. The north and south forks of Long Island are home
to some of the most frequented and famous beachfront property
it the United States, from Fire, Island, the gay Mecca of the
Atlantic, to the Hamptons, the favored playground of the rich
and powerful.
Outdoor adventure opportunities dot the beautiful beaches of the
Atlantic coast. Surfers shoot the curl at Montauk and Long Beach,
kayaking aficionados paddle around Shelter Island and cyclists
coast along Rte. 114’s scenic 7-mile stretch from East Hampton
to Sag Harbor. October and April make are fine months for hiking
on Fire Island and large eclectic crowds gather to swim and sun-bathe
on Jones Beach. Campers can pitch their tents in the sand at Cedar
Point and Hither Hill State Parks, but they’d better make
reservations well in advance and bring loads of bug repellent,
because there will be large crowds of both people and mosquitoes.
