Fly-fishing on Salmon River
New York’s Salmon River is a famous New York State fishing Mecca thanks to the schools of big trophy-size fish from Lake Ontario that swim through its lower 16 miles. Crowds of anglers come to this most challenging of New York rivers to test their skill and their muscle against the strength of the many species of trout and the enormous Chinook Salmon that dwell here, as well as the Salmon River’s powerful, fast-flowing current.

The major fishing season on the Salmon River starts in the late fall when the 1st large runs of migrating salmon and trout begin to appear, but there’s fishing to be done through of the year, and steelhead can be caught in numbers into November. All types of shore fishing is done on the Salmon, but fly-fishing remains one of the most popular, not because it is easy, but because it is especially challenging here.
