Though it’s been some time since the skyscraper at 350
5th Avenue, was the tallest building in the world, it remains
one of the most indelible symbols of New York City. For the past
75 years, no other single building has so embodied the spirit
of NYC in the minds of Americans.
The building’s distinctive shape is the result of the popular
Art Deco trend of the era in which it was built (1931), and the
zoning law of 1916 which required it to have a series of “setbacks”
or diminishing tiers in order to reduce shadows on the streets.
The Empire State Building’s ground floors take up an entire
Manhattan city block.
Between 10 and 20 people visit the Empire State Building every
single day, so visitors should be prepared for long waits, even
on the ticket lines. On a clear day visitors may see almost 80
miles from the observation deck of this beautiful 1,453+ foot
tall tower.
