Coney Island is located on the southernmost end of Brooklyn in
New York City, New York. Actually a peninsula, Coney Island is
best known for its amusement parks and famous beach on the Atlantic
Ocean.
Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States
between 1880 and World War II, attracting several million visitors
every year. At the height of its popularity it contained 3 competing
amusement parks and countless other independent amusements. The
Island declined in popularity after World War II, but it took
the opening of Disneyland in California to finally outdo Coney
Island.
Coney Island features a broad sandy beach stretching a distance
of roughly 2.5 miles. This continuous beach is followed for its
entire length by the Riegelmann boardwalk, one of the world's
longest. Several amusements are directly accessible from the north
side of the boardwalk, such as a variety of eateries, arcades
and the famous New York Aquarium.
