The Battery from above
Battery Park, or “The Battery”, as it’s known to the natives, is a 21-acre public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City, New York. The park takes its name from the artillery that was stationed there in colonial times in order to order to protect New York Harbor.

At one end of Battery Park is Pier A and Hope Garden, a memorial to AIDS victims. At the other end is the United States Coast Guard Battery Building. Ferries depart from the waterfront at Battery Park, bound for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Battery Park is located near several other points of interest. The U.S. Customs House/Museum of the American Indian is located across State Street to the northeast of Battery Park. The scenic Peter Minuit Plaza is situated directly in front of the South Ferry Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry on the southeast end of The Battery.
