Two thousand miles of trails make Adirondack Park one
or the best spots for hiking in upstate NY. The trails stretch out over
6 regions, the most popular of which is the High Peaks region near Lake
Placid. The trails are challenging but not at all hard to follow. Those
who love back packing along the coast will be happy with the many lakeside
trails here, like the ones around Lake George. The longest trail is
the Northville-Lake Placid Trail, which travels 135 miles through the
Adirondack Mountains.
To beat the crowds some visitors like to try a little winter backpacking
around November, but may is warmer and almost as uncrowded (and there
are less black flies than in the summer months). There is no access
fee to use Adirondacks Park, but there is a parking fee. Maps are available
at the Adirondack Park Visitor Interpretive Centers at Paul Smith and
Newcomb.
