New York’s Ice Caves of the Shawangunks have 2 very special features: The cave itself is a so-called “tectonic cave” formed as a piece of the mountain pulled away, creating a semicircular ravine. The cave is also an Ice Cave, and contains ice that remains in the cave throughout the whole year in some parts.
Due to these rare geological features the entire region looks very strange, like some fantastic, alien landscape. Most of the "caves" are more like open crevices, but there also is a true cave that is entered through a large wooden door in the side of the mountain.
