New York’s Howe Caverns lie in Coeymans limestone and Manlius limestone. Coeymans limestone is more difficult to dissolve than the Manlius variety, so the water naturally cuts through the Manlius layer, resulting in the almost perfectly flat ceilings that can be seen in parts of the cavern; these are actually the underside of the Coeymans limestone layer.
The regular Howe Caverns trip is over 1.6 km takes and takes and hour. It includes everything except the boat ride. Visitors who wish to take a longer trip of one hour and 20 minutes may wish to take the regular trip and a boat ride of 400m on the beautifully illuminated lake. This is a New York vacation spot that shouldn’t be missed. No other New York cave is quite the same.
