Rockaway Beach is located on the southernmost tip of the Rockaway Peninsula in the Queens borough, in New York City. It is situated on the South Shore of Long Island, and is spread between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay. Quite close to lower Manhattan, Rockaway Beach is visited by near about four million urban tourists each year.

The Rockaway beach is surrounded by Arverne to the east and Rockaway Park to the west, and is one of the largest urban beach in the United States. The Rockaway beach is regulated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Earlier, it was known as the "Irish Riviera", as it was highly populated with Irish American people.

Rockaway Beach stretches from 9th street to the 149th street and each street has different vibes. If you are interested in watching the breeding piping plovers, cute and chubby Atlantic Ocean shorebirds, then you have go to the Averne neighborhood (between B44th and B57th Streets) during the summer months.

The broad Rockaway Beach Boardwalk continues from Beach 73rd Street to Beach 109th Street, through the Hammels and Seaside neighborhoods. This portion of the sand is most soft and family friendly. You can walk or jog the boardwalk or take advantage of the parks, handball courts, basketball courts and roller hockey rings along the way. Going with young ones, you can wait and view the brightly colored Whaleamena sculpture, a sculpture of a whale that was originally part of the Children’s Zoo in Central Park. The whale was donated by Parks and subsequently restored by local volunteers. “Whaleamena” is located at the entrance to the Boardwalk at Beach 95th Street. For enjoying the best nightlife, bars and dance-till-you-drop spots, go around the Beach 111 th Street to Beach 116th Street.

Lifeguards are available along the beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day. During hot days, swimmers, walkers and runners are seen on the beach. There are seven playgrounds that provide entertainment for the young, while volleyball and skating keep the adults active. This beach has the city's only surfing areas, while in gentle waters, tourists can enjoy fishing striped bass and bluefish. And for those who love traditional beach activities, can be busy with swimming, sunbathing and snacking. Each year local volunteers organize a beach-and-dunes clean up.
