Recreational opportunities at Bottomless Lakes State Park include
New Mexico camping, picnicking, fishing, boating and wildlife
observation. The Park also features a scenic hiking trail system.
The bottomless lakes area was designated as the 1st of New Mexico
State Parks in 1933. At 90 feet Lea Lake is the deepest, and is
the only lake at Bottomless Lakes State Park where swimming is
allowed. The 2nd most well known bottomless lake is the Devil's
Inkwell, which is 32 ft. deep and takes its name from its steep
sides and dark water (the product of algae growth). Visitors can
rent paddleboats in the summer on the cheap.
Anglers will be happy to know that the lakes are stocked with
rainbow trout every winter. Lazy Lagoon is surrounded by dangerous
and malodorous mud flats, and is therefore unusable for recreational
activities, but it remains a perfect place to view visiting waterfowl
in their natural habitat.
