The Mogollon culture that lived in the Gila Cliff Dwellings settled in the Gila Wilderness in the 1280s and maintained a presence there through the early 1300s. The environment during this period appeared very much like it does today. The Gila Cliff Dwellings are enclosed by the Gila National Forest in the center of the Gila Wilderness, the nation's 1st designated Wilderness area.

Guided tours of the Gila Cliff Dwellings are offered twice a day in the summer at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., and once a day during the winter at noon. The tours start at the Gila Cliff Dwellings themselves and it takes about a half hour to reach them from the trailhead.

There are a number of other attractions near the Gila Cliff Dwellings besides the dwellings themselves. The Gila and Aldo Leopold Wilderness areas are popular destinations for hikers and backpackers. There are also many hot springs in the area for visitors to enjoy.
