Red River is a tiny little New Mexico resort town with enough outdoor activities to keep the most enthusiastic outdoor adventurer busy for weeks. During the summer the Rio Colorado (Red River) is stocked with more trout than any other river in the country, keeping visiting fisherman bagging their limits. Horseback riders can find riding for any skill or endurance level, and all day rides are available. Those who prefer 4 wheels to 4 hooves have a number of paths at their disposal. Hiking is a favorite here, including the ½ day Red River Hiking Trail. Biking trails are abundant, as are pick-nick areas and parks. The Carson National Forest allows camping as well.

In the winter the Red River Ski Area is the place to be. Red River is a ski resort town with lots of shops to get you gear and 58 trails divided equally between skill levels. The high volume lift capacity and central location of the slopes make everything easy. There is a top-notch snowboarding park in the area, as well as snowmobiles for rent and the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area.

Visitors staying in Red River have any number of lodges to choose from, like the roomy units at Mountain Shadows Lodge or the comfy down-to-earth charm and great views at the Yellow Rose Bed & Breakfast. Bobcat Pass has a family pleasing chuck-wagon dinner, but young adults might want to have their after-dinner drink at the Bull o’ the Woods, with its live music, karaoke and dance floor.

Every July Red River hosts the Cowboy’s New Year Rodeo, but there are rodeos all year round in Red River. 90% of the town’s accommodations are within walking distance of the Red River Ski Area, and those in the other 10% can get there via the free trolley system.
