Slaughter Canyon Cave

New Mexico Home | New Mexico Sitemap
Slaughter Canyon Cave is one of over 100 caves located at Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, but is not part of the same cave system as Carlsbad Caverns. Tours of Slaughter Canyon Cave are guided by rangers on spelunking tours, and include narrow, uneven, slippery trails, with tall steps to climb up and down; the tour is not so much difficult as it is strenuous. Fortunately the passages are wide.

Visitors must bring sturdy hiking shoes, good lights, 2 strong flashlights with fresh batteries per person and drinking water.

Slaughter Canyon Cave highlights include the 27m Monarch stalagmite, the Christmas Tree (a sparkling, crystal-decorated column), a delicate, ankle-high rim-stone dam named the Chinese Wall and some archaeological remains in the form of an old bat guano mining operation.
