New Jersey has a moderate climate; its winters are cold, its summers warm and humid. In the northwestern hills winter temperatures are somewhat colder and summer temperatures slightly cooler than in the rest of New Jersey.

Precipitation averages 46 inches annually while snowfall totals about 16 inches. Occasionally hurricanes and violent spring storms damage beachfront property, and floods along northern rivers in New Jersey are not uncommon. On average serious droughts occurs about once every 15 years in New Jersey.
