Ramapo Reservation County Park is situated alongside the very busy Interstate 287 and sliced by US-202 between Oakland and Mahway, New Jersey, yet the park has been closed to vehicular traffic. The Ramapo River flows alongside US-202 here It has a tributary called Bear Swamp Brook, which provides a couple very nice New Jersey Waterfalls: Bear Swamp Falls, which is displayed in an upper and lower plunge, and Buttercup Falls which, in the early Spring, flows off a rock ledge to tumble nearly 25 feet.
The surrounding woods shield the falls from the sounds and scents of the traffic surrounding the park. Visitors must walk in on Bear Swamp Road but the trail is short and easy. This section of the Ramapo River has the best fly-fishing in New Jersey.
