Discovered by the famous Sea Captain
Henry Hudson in the early 1600’s, Sandy Hook is 1,665-acre
barrier peninsula with 7-miles of beautiful New Jersey beaches.
Sandy Hook is perfect for surf casting, swimming in the ocean
and frolicking in the sand. The more than 300 species of migratory
birds and pristine holly forest also make Sandy Hook Beach an
important ecological site.
Because there is no beach town or commercial community in Sandy
Hook, travelers lodge in Highlands, New Jersey, which is located
on the hill across the bay. Highlands has enough seafood restaurants,
nightlife and outdoor activities to occupy any visitor.
The main historic site in Highlands is the pair of lighthouses
called the Twin Lights. This was the 1st twin lighthouse ever
built, as well as the 1st to use kerosene and the 1st to use electricity.
The maritime museum is also a popular destination for nautical
