The largest of the New Hampshire
lakes, Lake Winnipesaukee is the 6th largest natural lake in the
United States. Lake Winnipesaukee is roughly 26 miles long and
10 miles wide, covers more than 70 square miles, has a maximum
depth of 212 feet, and contains over 250 islands. The lake is
crenelated by numerous peninsulas that create a total shoreline
of nearly 290 miles. The Native American name "Winnipesaukee"
is said to mean "smile of the Great Spirit" or perhaps
"beautiful water in a high place", though with 2 such
wildly disparate interpratations it’s hard to put much credit
in either.
Lake Winnipesaukee, along with the rest of New Hampshire's Lakes
Region, has been a tourist destination for over 100 years. It
is home to several summer theater troupes and offers a wide variety
of land and water recreational opportunities, including many hiking
trails in and around the surrounding New Hampshire mountains. |
