Las Vegas, Nevada is located in the southwestern United States,
east of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Nevada lies
in the rain-shadow desert formed by the mountain range, and as
such receives very little rainfall.
Las Vegas is located in the southern edge of Nevada in a broad
flat basin surrounded by barren mountains. The city appears to
be a huge oasis in this desert valley, but this lushness is only
made possible by the water diverted from Lake Mead by the Boulder
Dam. Las Vegas, like the rest of the state of Nevada, gets less
than 1.5 centimeters of rain in any given month; what little rainfall
the city receives generally fall from January through March. Las
Vegas is extremely sunny and hot, and yes, it is a dry heat. Summer
temperatures often top 100 degrees F. The winters are mild, though
the nights can be fairly chilly.
