The Neon Museum is located downtown at the Fremont Street Experience.
It was created by the city of Las Vegas to preserve the neon signs
that are that remains of many of the iconic old properties demolished
to make way for the new mega-resorts of today. With their spectacular
colors, intricate animation and sheer size, these signs are considered
by many to be true works of art.
The Neon Museum officially opened in 1996 with the installation
of the Hacienda Horse and Rider sign, which was originally created
in 1967 for the Hacienda Hotel, the site that is today occupied
by the Mandalay Bay resort. The museum is currently an outdoor
walking tour, and has installed several more signs since its opening,
such as the Anderson Dairy mascot, Aladdin's genie lamp and The
Flame Restaurant sign.
The museum has also created a neon sign "boneyard" where
non-restored historic signs are displayed. This 3-acre site is
located near Downtown Las Vegas.
