Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Pictures of Lake Mead do it small justice, and only hint at the myriad of activities available there. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area features numerous activities and places to go at any time of the year. Lake Mead Marina and the area’s enormous lakes accommodate boaters, swimmers, sunbathers and fishermen alike, while its mighty desert is a favorite of hikers, photographers and sightseers.

Three of America's four desert ecosystems, namely the Mojave, the Great Basin, and the Sonora Deserts, meet in Lake Mead National Recreation Area. As a result, this apparently desolate region contains an astounding variety of unique flora and fauna, such as the snowy egret, the tiny fern, bighorn sheep and jackrabbits.

The Lake Mead visitor center is located about four miles east of Boulder City, Nevada. The helpful staff there can provide information, books and maps, and other materials for a reasonable fee. The visitor center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.
