Fort Kearney has a storied history,
rivaled by few campgrounds in the world. In a younger North America,
it was used to keep westward travelers safe, act as a station
house for the pony express and home to the Pawnee Scouts.
Currently, the fort is less of a shelter house and more an information
and discovery center with rebuilt blacksmith shop, stockade and
parade grounds. And the nearby Recreation Center is the perfect
place to shack up between Nebraska adventures. With a swim-specific
beach, trails, grills, modern restrooms, and electric or primitive
pads, you can rough it or rely on various modern conveniences.
Fort Kearney is a revelatory, relaxing way to see Nebraska from
several vantage points in one stop.
