The Yellowstone River, the longest of the Montana rivers, flows through some truly beautiful scenery. It runs through the stunning Paradise Valley in its upper section, surrounded by the Absaroka Mountains on all sides. The river is free of any major dams throughout its entire length and none of its flows are regulated in any way.

The fly-fishing on the Yellowstone River is 2nd to none, and is internationally considered to be one of the best trout waters in the United States. The upper half of the river is full of cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and brown trout, while the half below Billings becomes a warm water fishery for large walleye, catfish and sturgeon.

While 1st-rate Montana fly-fishing is available for wade anglers, the Yellowstone River is generally best fished from a boat. The Yellowstone River is too wide and deep to wade across, and flows fast in its upper portion, factors that can deny wade anglers access to many superb fishing spots.
