Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area
The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is composed of more than 120,000 acres straddling the northern Wyoming and southern Montana borders. It was created in 1966 following the construction of the Yellowtail Dam, which harnessed the waters of the Bighorn River and turned that variable stream into the breathtaking, 70+ mile long Bighorn Lake, 55 miles of which are held within magnificent Bighorn Canyon.

Bighorn Canyon features a large assortment of recreational activities, like camping, biking, boating, fishing and hiking. The canyon also boasts bravura vistas and wonderful opportunities for wildlife observation. Boats can be rented in the summer at the recreation area’s marina. Afterbay Lake below the Yellowtail Dam is a first-rate spot for trout fishing, as is the Bighorn River below the Afterbay Dam.

There are two visitor centers for Bighorn Canyon, one in Fort Smith, Montana and another near Lovell, Wyoming. There are also several other developed visitors’ facilities.
