Big Hole National Battlefield is a site along the Nez Perce National Historic Trail, and is located 10 miles west of Wisdom, Montana, along Montana Highway 43.

In 1877 the Nez Perce Indians were camped in the Big Hole area when they were attacked by United State’s troops under the command of Col. John Gibbon. The site of this battle (some 655 acres) is managed today by the National Park Service.

The Big Hole Battlefield Visitor Center interprets the Battle at Big Hole as well as the War of 1877, a 5 month long clash between 2 peoples poles apart in their beliefs about land rights, the nature of authority and the structure of society. Details of the battle are provided by exhibits, guide booklets, and various battlefield markers. There are 2 self-guided trails leading from the lower parking area to the position of the Nez Perce camp, and on to area where U.S. soldiers were held under siege in the latter half of the battle.
