The Big Piney River in Missouri is
the biggest tributary of the Gasconade River. It is considered
one of the best Missouri fishing streams in the state. Anglers
particularly enjoy the upper and middle reaches, with its beautiful
limestone bluffs and lush pine strands, where many wild turkeys
make their home. Several good-sized and attractive springs flow
into the river, making it floatable throughout the summer (unless
the weather is abnormally dry).
While the lower river is rather less attractive and more urbanized,
but these last 3 miles do offer the better take-out at the mouth.
From here it is possible to continue a Missouri rafting trip on
the Gasconade River.
Paddlers may be interested in some statistics. The difficulty-level
is rated at I, or occasionally II with gradients generally at
4.3 from Baptist Camp to Boiling Spring, 4.2 to Hwy 32, 3.6 to
Prewett Spring Ford, 4.7 to Ross Access and 4.4 to Gasconade River.
