This trail extends 444 miles and past the
Mississippi borderline into Tennessee and Alabama. It is one of the
more historic stretches in Mississippi, formerly used by Native Americans
who originally settled the areas between, Andrew Jackson’s soldiers
following victory at the battle of New Orleans, farmers who would float
their crops downstream on makeshift barges and return home via the trail
and lastly, nature lovers and history buffs.
Although the trail has been sort of chopped up over time, there are
still portions of the historic original left in sections. New roads
built prior to conservation efforts have cut through and over the original
pathway. But to experience the path as a whole, some choose to trek
along Mississippi parkways, which only see very mild traffic.
The long pieces that exist stop and start in small towns all over Mississippi
and Tennessee. If you want to follow the footsteps of this country’s
history, or blaze your own version, Natchez is the perfect nostalgic
choice.
