Dentzel CarouselThe Dentzel Carousel is a Mississippi attraction with a charm equal to the most up-to-date Mississippi amusement park. The Carousel was manufactured in 1896 for the 1904 St. Louis Exposition. It was then sold to the City of Meridian. The Dentzel Carousel arrived in Meridian, Alabama in 1909 and has occupied its same location in Highland Park.

The Dentzel Carousel was the creation of Gustav Dentzel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, A cabinet-maker by trade, Dentzel established the Dentzel Factory in the 1860’s. His family had manufactured carousels in Germany. The Dentzel Factory manufactured 2 or 3 carousels each year. The Great Depression spelled the end of the factory in 1929.

In 1977 Highland Park and Meridian's Dentzel Carousel and Carousel House were placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1986, the Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Carousel House were designated as National Landmarks, an honor was given to only 11 carousels nationwide.
