As you venture west across the United States, you may
notice more and more of these rail-to-trail projects popping up everywhere.
It’s a fine idea to take something obsolete like much of the nearly
extinct railroad systems and create something new and useful: a means
to get outside and immerse yourself in the wilderness.
Heartland gives trail-hounds a variety of options. Since the trail is
paved and relatively flat, bikes and wheelchairs are allowed. And, as
always, the trail is open to hikers who can create their own pace, stopping
at night to camp in one of the multiple state parks along the 50-mile
stretch.
And due to Minnesota’s extreme climates, Heartland is now configured
for snowmobile enthusiasts. Speed along the path or discover detours
to snowmobile-specific, maze like sections.
