The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is the jewel of the Minnesota canoe areas. BWCAW is located in the Superior National forest, where its 1-million+ acres stretch 150 miles along the border of Canada and the Quentico Provincial Park. BWCAW contains 100’s of lakes and rivers and over 1,200 miles of canoe routes.

BWCAW boasts some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife in the United States. It contains towering cliffs, waterfalls, woods and an abundance of clear blue lakes. It is the home to bears, egrets, wolves, beavers, Bald Eagles and several endangered species. Hunters, fishers, campers, and canoeists around the globe consider it a paradise.

BWCAW is a True Wilderness, with no roads, power-lines, etc., and many areas are only accessible by canoe. Visitors must comply with all regulations, and will need maps.

Applications for permits begin in November every year and are processed by lottery. For more information call toll-free at 1-877-550-6777 or go to www.bwcaw.org.
