The Au Sable River is a National Scenic River located in Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forest. The Au Sable is one of the State's most prized river fating destinations. This is no raging whitewater monster, however. This gorgeous river is placid, flat and peaceful, and is the perfect way for visitors to get a gander at all of the autumn colors that line the river’s banks. Peak fall color is in late September to mid-October.
The officially designated scenic section of the river is 23 miles long, starting in Mio, but it's possible to take much longer trips over its 100-plus-mile course. Mio lies at the junction of Michigan 33 and Michigan 72 in lower northeastern Michigan. Grayling is a 2nd popular put-in.
There's Michigan wildlife in abundance here, too. Visitors may be lucky enough to see eagles, ospreys and loons, making it a prime destination for bird watching in Michigan.
