The National Parks Service has deemed
the region of Keweenaw worthy of historic park status and thorough
protection from commercial development. Much of the region remains
privately owned, but there are recent moves to make the park more
accessible.
There are sixteen separate sites, all offering a different glimpse
into the region. Some are easily accessible, dotted with museums
and historic plaques that commemorate the region’s former
copper-rich industry. Other plots are desolate and serene, consisting
of backwoods waterfalls and primitive campsites.
So regardless of your preference, Keweenaw will most likely become
a favorite Michigan outdoor destination.
