Forty five miles north of Copper Harbor,
Isle Royale is the natural gem of Lake Superior. Well preserved and
maintained, it is a pristine example of well-executed forest management.
The Isle acts as a time capsule for native wildlife. Ninety nine percent
of the region is protected, leaving one percent for slight accommodation
by outdoor adventurers. It is relatively desolate and not as popular
as mainland parks, attracting about twenty thousand visitors annually.
Laced with rivers and ridges, it is one of the most scenic, serene cool
climate parks in the contiguous United States.
Packs of wolves highlight the diverse wildlife. Isle Royale has endless
trees, wildflowers, and orchids that are worth some time and dedication
to find.
Activities here include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, and general
natural exploration. The thick forestry would take days to traverse,
but may be worth a good chunk of time.
