This group of islands, like many
of Michigan’s Lake Superior refuges, is extremely remote
and rarely traversed. Little human activity takes place on the
likes of Lighthouse and West Huron, and it is evident when hiking
through the region.
Primitive trails line the two specks of land, weaving their way
through relatively flat, densely wooded terrain. Lots of natural
study takes place here. Conversationalists who want to preserve
the rare species calling Huron home have deemed the islands an
important port for obscure migratory birds.
Since you can only access the island by private boat, don’t
be surprised to have the region to yourself, especially out of
season.
