 At
just shy of 1,180 cubic miles of water Lake Michigan is the 2nd largest
Great Lake by volume, is the only Great Lake whose boundaries lie entirely
within the contiguous United States. Lake Michigan is nearly 120 miles
wide and more than 300 miles long, with over 1,600 miles of shoreline.
At its deepest point the floor of Lake Michigan lies 925 feet below
the surface, but on average is around 280 feet deep.
Anglers who fish Lake Michigan’s waters can catch fresh-water
species in a deep-sea fishing atmosphere. Game fish in Lake Michigan
are numerous and include walleye, Atlantic salmon, lake sturgeon, brown
trout and many more.
Most types of water-sports practiced on Michigan lakes are also enjoyed
on Lake Michigan, including recreational boating, jet skiing, water-skiing
and swimming. The Lake Michigan shoreline even provides visitors with
several beaches to frolic on during the late spring and summer.
