A lighthouse on Lake Michigan.At just shy of 1,180 cubic miles of water Lake Michigan is the 2nd largest Great Lake by volume, is the only Great Lake whose boundaries lie entirely within the contiguous United States. Lake Michigan is nearly 120 miles wide and more than 300 miles long, with over 1,600 miles of shoreline. At its deepest point the floor of Lake Michigan lies 925 feet below the surface, but on average is around 280 feet deep.

Anglers who fish Lake Michigan’s waters can catch fresh-water species in a deep-sea fishing atmosphere. Game fish in Lake Michigan are numerous and include walleye, Atlantic salmon, lake sturgeon, brown trout and many more.

Most types of water-sports practiced on Michigan lakes are also enjoyed on Lake Michigan, including recreational boating, jet skiing, water-skiing and swimming. The Lake Michigan shoreline even provides visitors with several beaches to frolic on during the late spring and summer.
