Thirty-four plots of land within
miles of downtown Boston lay scattered around this busy harbor.
They have all been lumped under the moniker “National Park
Area,” but each island has a slightly different amount of
land space and human intrusion.
Some of the islands, such as Lovells and Bumpkin have developed
several campsites for visitors who want to escape the mainland.
Others have little or no trace of humans, a few small trails weaving
back and forth or strictly uninterrupted natural environs. Overall,
besides some visitors centers, docks and so on, the islands have
been well maintained and continue to be havens for the abundant
native wildlife.
