Massachusetts is known for cold winters and moderately warm summers. Temperatures in the Berkshires are cooler year round. The coast of Massachusetts experiences the warmest temperatures while in the summer sea breezes keep coastal areas cooler than interior areas. 74°F in July and 30°F in January are normal. Snowfall averages 42 inches, though deeper levels are common in the Berkshires. The central highlands and western hills are also normally colder and snowier than other regions.

Massachusetts’ weather has a balance of cool, dry Canadian air and warmer, moister tropical air. The usual weather pattern is a number of fine days followed by a few wet days, which averages out to approximately 50% clear, 25% wet and 25% overcast.
