Recreational opportunities abound on this picturesque peninsula formed by the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. Swimming, fishing, boating and camping are just a few of the activities to be enjoyed in this beautiful bay setting. This park's peaceful surroundings belie its history as the location of a prison camp which imprisoned as many as 52,264 Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. A museum on site recounts this vivid history. Once the site of a Civil War prison, Point Lookout State Park has over 1,000 acres of waterfront property. Thousands of visitors each year enjoy the beaches, fishing waters, and overnight facilities. There are 143 campsites, 1 youth area, and 6 camper cabins. There is even a rustic cottage located directly on the shore of the Potomac River overlooking Cornfield Harbor near the confluence with the Chesapeake Bay.
