Damming
up a creek to power a gristmill created Smithville Lake in Maryland’s
Caroline Country. Today the mill no longer exists and this lake is now
used only for recreational activities and provides visitors with excellent
Maryland fishing.
Smithville Lake is a long narrow lake that covers 43 surface-acres and
has a maximum depth 8 feet, and an average depth of 3 feet. The lower
2/3rd’s of Smithville Lake is made up of exceptional fish habitat
created by a severe ice storm in the early 1990's that caused treetops
to snap off and fall into the lake. Fish also live amongst the roots
of the lush aquatic vegetation.
Smithville Lake supports a standard bass/bluegill fishery, but Anglers
may also catch other species. The lake is home to crappie, sunfish,
pickerel, catfish, shad and chub suckers.
Boating is also a pleasant pastime on Smithville Lake. There are no
horsepower limitations on the lake, but the maximum speed limit is 6
knots. Camping and swimming are not permitted at Smithville Lake. |
