The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal follows the Potomac River for more than 180 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland. The canal operated from 1828-1924, and was the primarily means of hauling coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Lockhouses, aqueducts and 100’s of other original structures illustrate the canal's important role during the “Canal Era”.

There are a multitude of outdoor activities to enjoy along the C&O Canal, such as viewing the Great Falls of the Potomac from the overlook on Olmsted Island, or enjoying exhibits at any or all of the park’s 6 visitor centers. The towpath provides an almost completely level, uninterrupted trail through the lovely Potomac River Valley; millions of visitors hike or bike the C&O Canal’s scenic route every year. Visitors can take a trip back in time by taking a mule-drawn canal boat ride at Georgetown or Great Falls. Canoeing enthusiasts are sure to enjoy the watered section of the canal.
