A clear day on Mooselookmeguntic Lake.At 16,300 surface-acres Mooselookmeguntic Lake is one of the largest lakes in Maine. The name Mooselookmeguntic is believed to be an ancient Abanaki Indian word meaning “passage to place where the moose feed” , or possibly “moose feeding among the trees”. Whatever Mooselookmeguntic means, it stands head and shoulders over most Maine lakes thanks to its numerous outdoor recreation opportunities and breath-taking scenery.

Anglers from all over the US know this lake as an excellent Maine fishing destination. Fallfish, salmon, brook trout, brown trout and many other types of fish are present in Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
Mooselookmeguntic Lake is also a prime Maine canoeing lake. Paddlers can enjoy miles of open water and easily access other lakes in the Rangeley Lakes chain.

There are several protected land parcels around Mooselookmeguntic Lake which are opent to the public and may be used for hiking and wildlife viewing. Wilderness campsites run by the Stephen Phillips Memorial Trust can be found along Mooselookmeguntic Lake’s western shore and on a number of its small islands.
