Kennebunkport downtown
The Kennebunks in Maine are made up of the towns of Kennebunkport, Kennebunk and the three public Kennebunk Beaches. This quaint yet active resort area is famous for being the vacation home of the Bush family. Kennebunkport is the most well known area in the Kennebunks. Dock Sq. is the center of town where all the best shops and eateries are.

Many artists have called Kennebunkport home, and there are numerous galleries and museums to enjoy. The L.A. Frechette Gallery features seascape paintings by the award-winning artist. The Abacus Gallery showcases American arts and crafts. History buffs will want to check out the Kennebunkport Historical Society and the preserved fishing vessel The Phyllis A.

The village of Kennebunk, west of the Kennebunk River, offers tours of its historic districts. The best is the Kennebunk National Historic District Walk, which begins at the Brick Store Museum.

Kennebunk’s three beaches are popular spots for visitors. Gooch’s Beach is the largest and most crowded. Here sunbathers, beachcombers and castle builders can take a dip or bodysurf in the Atlantic. Appropriately named Middle Beach is a bit too rocky for swimmers and surfers, but there are excellent trails for strolling, jogging, biking and skating. Mother Beach is the smallest and gentlest of the Kennebunk Beaches. Its playground and forgiving surf make it the favorite of kids and families.

There are several outdoor adventures to enjoy in the Kennebunks. There is excellent golf, as well as fantastic boating, chartered fishing and other water sports in Chicks or Kennebunkport Marinas. Divers can hit The Diver’s Locker just 15 minutes from downtown Kennebunkport to get all their gear or arrange guided beach and boating dives. When the tide goes out on Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport visitors can walk to Timber Island and explore its shores and bird-watch in its marshes. Just make sure to get back to the mainland before the tide comes back in!

The Goat Island Light House, built in 1859, is still in operation; it’s best viewed from Cape Porpoise. Salty Acres Campgrounds are about a mile from Goose Rocks Beach and have 255 campsites for both tents and RV’s. Ever seen a Peruvian Alpaca being fleeced? Ever seen an Alpaca at all? Take the kids to see these rather lovely llama-like creatures at Lightfoot Farms.
