Wells
Beach in Maine is a 4000-yard long barrier beach that is partitioned
off from the mainland by the Webhannet River. The sections of Wells
that are public beach are wide, sandy and attractive. Even at high tide
during the peak of the summer tourist season there’s lots of room
for sunbathing, strolling past the breakers, or engaging in other beach
activities.
There are other attractions to the Wells Beach area as well. The beach
is surrounded with sand dunes and nearby marshes that provide a home
to birds and waterfowl, so birdwatcher should bring their field-guides.
Amenities include lifeguards (during the summer) public restrooms, restaurants,
a playground, an arcade, souvenir shops, and ample parking. Wells Harbor,
located where the mouth of the Webhannet River flows into the Atlantic
Ocean, has a stone jetty that protects a pleasant beach that provides
an excellent view of the boats in the harbor.
