Rutherford
Beach is located in central Cameron Parish of Louisiana south of the
communities of Creole and Oak Grove, not far from the city of Lake Charles.
This excellent Louisiana canoeing and kayaking beach is situated at
the old mouth of the Mermentau River. Its position there permits paddlers
to go shallow water estuary boating through the old Mermentau River
system. It also provides access to Gulf activities toward Grand Chenier
to the east and toward Cameron to the west.
Miles of Louisiana beaches can be accessed along the coast. The area
is famous for its bird watching and shell collecting opportunities.
Paddlers who wish to take part in a combined Gulf and Mermentau River
trip can head up the Mermentau River for approximately 9 miles to the
Mermentau River Navigation Channel Gulf outlet, then on out into the
Gulf before heading back westward along the coast to Rutherford Beach.
