Overlooking Daniel Boone forest
The 700,00 acres of rugged mountain terrain, shadowed valleys and primordial woods that make up Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest provide the ideal environment for outdoor adventure. Hiking, camping, hunting in the forest are favorite pastimes in Daniel Boone National Forest. There are campgrounds at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, as well as those found at Twin Knobs, Koomer Ridge, Turkey Foot and the Barren Fork Horse Camp. And folks just love boating and fishing on the man-made Cave and Laurel Lakes. The Class I, II and III whitewater rafting down the Red River Gorge takes visitors through some of Kentucky’s most striking scenery. Day trips are almost as good as overnight stays. The country is wild, but the amenities of “civilization” aren’t far away.

Of all Daniel Boone National Forest’s natural features, the grand, eerily symmetrical shape of the Natural Bridge is the most eye-catching.

The Sheltowee Trace is a 268-mile National Recreation Trail named after Daniel Boone’s Shawnee “Indian Name”, which translates to “Big Turtle”. No one knows why. Nearby Corbin Kentucky is home to the original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, and is filled with memorabilia and KFC artifacts, as well as all that delicious poultry.
