A fishing boat on Lake Barkley.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impounded Kentucky’s Lake Barkley in 1966. A dam impounds the Cumberland River near the town of Grand Rivers, roughly 38 miles up stream from where it empties into the Ohio River. Lake Barkley links with Kentucky Lake via canal 1 mile above the dam. The lakes run parallel to each other for over 50 miles, with Land Between the Lakes recreational area situated between them, creating one of the best freshwater recreational systems in the United States.

Lake Barkley is over 130 miles long. Its shoreline measures more than 1,000 miles. For flood control purposes the lake's water level is fluctuated from summer to winter. Summer pool, 359 feet, is usually reached by the 1st of May. The water level begins dropping gradually on July 1st so that the winter pool level of 354 feet is reached by December 1st. The spring rise begins on April 1st. Naturally the lake's water surface area varies with the pool level: 57,920 acres in the summer pool, 45,210 acres in the winter.
